Worn Out?

Feeling Worn Out This Year?

As we are entering the thanksgiving season, it dawned on me that “Thanksgiving” is the answer! There are times when we feel worn down and unmotivated, and we ask, “Where has my energy gone?” Whether we blame life’s circumstances, old age, or the weather, there are days when we just feel tired or “blue.”

Now, if you do a quick search on the internet, you’ll find a never-ending list of tips to help you feel more energetic. I found suggestions (and sometimes conflicting counsel) including the following:

  • Sleep at least eight hours a night
  • Eat more calories (or eat less calories)
  • Take “miracle” supplements
  • Get more sunshine
  • Drink more caffeine
  • Start your day with a big breakfast
  • And much, much more

Yet the Bible offers a guaranteed “feel better” plan! There are at least 44 verses related to being thankful – even more if you include words like cheerful, joyful, grateful, and content. Here is one very specific verse (emphasis mine):

“A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person’s strength (or dries up your bones).” Prov. 17:22

Do you get that? The scriptures say that cheer – being grateful and with thanksgiving – is LIFE-GIVING. The opposite – a complaining spirit, unhappiness, negativity – these DRY UP YOUR BONES. And here are a few more references just for good measure:

“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”  1 Thessalonians 5:18

“Oh give thanks to the Lord; call upon his name; make known his deeds among the peoples!” 1 Chronicles 16:8

“Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.” Col. 2:6-7

Being thankful is part of God’s plan for us to live full and fruitful lives.

May you abound in thanksgiving and enjoy a new energy and joy that comes from being grateful,
